                                                  ~New Owners Information~

Basic care and observation are very important during first few weeks with your new TOY BREED PUPPY: *A copy of this
information will be included in your puppy pack
.

Protecting your new puppy from Diseases
Once you have your new puppy it is best to avoid taking your pet to the park, on walks in the neighborhood, or around other
pets until it has been fully vaccinated and has a fully developed immune system (usually 16 weeks of age).  Until your new
puppy has had it’s full set of vaccinations, its immune system may not be properly equipped to handle diseases with which it
could come in contact. Your puppy could easily get worms, Parvovirus, Coccidia or other contagious diseases from
contaminated feces it my come in contact with or just by walking on the dirt.  Unfortunately, these diseases can live in
stray animal feces and on the ground for many days, even years and can be easily transmitted to an unprotected puppy.
Puppies are very curious of their new surroundings and will go smelling the ground, trees, rocks, flower beds, anywhere
other dogs or cats may have left their markings & it is possibly dangerous for your new puppy.

Feeding & Care
Make sure that your puppy does not go without food for too long. Due to their small size, toy breeds are prone to low blood
sugar (Hypoglycemia) & it is especially important for them to have appropriate amounts of food frequently. For this reason,
we recommend either free feeding or feeding several small meals a day. With free feeding, you will need to insure that
your pet does not overeat and that other pets do not keep any one pet from eating. We recommend feeding a premium
small bite puppy food like Purina, coupons for this food are included in your Puppy Pack. Also, just like a child, you can teach
your puppy to like certain 'treats', it is best to give them good quality dog treats. A recipe for great, healthy treats is
also included in your Puppy Pack. If you have the time to make them, your puppy will love them! Ask your vet for more
suggestions.
It is best not to change your puppy’s food quickly after you bring him/her home, this can cause the puppy Diarrhea. If you
must change to another type of food, do so slowly over the course of a couple of weeks by mixing it with the Purina Puppy
Chow in increasing proportions until the puppy is entirely changed over to the new food.
Make sure that your puppy has drinking water available at all times.
Make sure to keep your puppy warm & dry.
Make sure your puppy gets plenty of quiet time & frequent naps. You should provide your puppy with a quiet space of his or
her own for napping, etc. Puppies can also get over stimulated & need quiet time to themselves & also lots of rest (naps)
just like a human baby.

*Watch carefully for signs of stress induced problems
1). Hypoglycemia is characterized by staggering, vacant stare, sleeping , lethargy, shaking head in an unnatural way (rolling
the neck). Hypoglycemia is easily preventable by following the instructions above regarding rest, food & excitement.
2). Diarrhea If these issues occur: If caught quickly & treated properly these conditions are easily curable & are common
stress related issues for small/Toy breed puppies after going to new homes. For more information on these two issues,
please see the accompanying information.

Vaccinations
Your puppy is currently up to date on their shots & wormings. Always keep your puppy up to date on their shots and consult
your veterinarian about worming.

We thank you for purchasing one of our puppies & hope they bring you as much love & joy as they have brought to us! Please
feel free to contact us if you have any questions!
                                                         Hypoglycemia & Diarrhea

Hypoglycemia is not genetic or inherited. Hypoglycemia is very common in puppies, especially small breed puppies such as
Shih Tzu, and is easily prevented and/or managed with proper care. The only case of Hypoglycemia we have ever had
reported to us involved a puppy left alone with the new owners’ children during the day for several days. Shih Tzu are
hearty breeds & tolerate play & environmental changes well, however, if a puppy is not allowed to get proper rest, food,
water & is subjected to too much excitement for too long, it can become ill!

Watch carefully for signs of Hypoglycemia, this happens when blood sugar level drops and may be caused by stress from
being in a new environment, too much excitement, and/or not eating properly.

Signs of Hypoglycemia are: Staggering, vacant stare, sleeping , lethargy, shaking head in an unnatural way (rolling the
neck) Also the gums will be very pale white or blue.

Should this occur: Quick and calm action is required IMMEDIATELY! If you have Nutri-Cal give it to the puppy as per
instructions on the container, if not ,use a drop or two of honey or clear karo syrup, rubbing it on the tongue and gums. If
neither is available, use plain white sugar. Continue with small amounts until puppy returns to normal. If there is no
improvement, contact your veterinarian IMMEDIATELY. If the puppy shows signs of Hypoglycemia, he/she should be taken
to your veterinarian to be checked out as soon as it is convenient, preferably within the next 24 hours, even if the puppy
showed improvement with one of the remedies above.

Watch for diarrhea --this will cause puppy to dehydrate quickly & is commonly caused by stress, change of environment, &
or changing food.

Should this occur: Make sure your puppy gets plenty of water, you can give a pea sized, softened ball of some type of hard
cheese such as Colby-Jack or Cheddar after each loose bowel movement to clear up the diarrhea. You should take your
puppy to see your veterinarian as soon as possible if these symptoms persist.
